The Eighth International Conference on Oriental Astronomy (ICOA-8)

Major Theme: Astronomical Heritages in Asia-Pacific Areas

ICOA-8 will concentrate on astronomical heritages in Asia-Pacific Areas, including heritages both tangible and intangible, from the remote past to the mid-20th century. Papers on recognition, analysis, conservation, restoration, reconstruction and exhibition of these heritages are welcome.

We also welcome, as at other recent ICOAs, papers on: 1) Ethnoastronomy and Archaeoastronomy; 2) The Emergence and Development of Astrophysics in the Asian-Pacific Region; 3) Applied Historical Astronomy; 4) The Exchange and Development of Astronomical Knowledge; 5) Historical Records and Observations; 6) Ancient Observatories and Early Astronomical Instrumentation; 7) Calendars, Calendrical Sciences and Chronology; 8) Star Maps and Star Catalogues; 9) Western Astronomy Brought by Jesuit Missionaries to Asia; 12) The History of Radio Astronomy in Asia; and 13) Other Recent Research.

Venues: The Eastern Campus of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC, 96 Jinzhai Road) , and Anhui Provincial Museum, Hefei, China

After Conference Events: Weekend field tour to the Wan’an Town in the Yellow Mountain area, a center for the manufacture of traditional Chinese compasses and sundials since at least the 16th century, where the workshops are still active.

Hotel Rooms and Rates:

1.   Guest House on the Eastern Campus USTC.

Single Rooms: single bed with television, internet and bathroom, 180RMB/night per room, including breakfast.

Standard rooms: double beds with television, internet and bathroom, 220RMB/night per room, including breakfast for registered participants.

2.   Jiannan Chun Hotel by the Eastern Campus USTC, 10 minute walk to conference venues.

Standard rooms: double beds with television, internet and bathroom, 260RMB/night per room, including breakfast for registered participants.

3.   Jinjiang Star Hotel, 20 minute walk to the Venue.

Single Rooms: single bed with television, internet and bathroom, 180RMB/night per room.

Standard rooms: double beds with television, internet and bathroom, 280RMB/night per room, including breakfast for registered participants.

IMPORTANT: Since these hotels do not accept reservations from outside of mainland China, the LOC will make the reservation for the participants in advance. Please let the LOC know your choice in the ICOA-8 Registration Form attached to the end of this circular.

Registration Fee:

Normal Rate: 120USD/800RMB, for coffee/tea breaks, a reception, a banquet, inter-venue transportation, meeting rooms, the abstract book, etc..

Concessionary Rate: 60USD/400RMB, for students, retirees, post-docs within 5 years of PhD, and accompanying persons.

IMPORTANT: An additional 50USD will be applied to registrations after 1 February 2014.

After Conference Tour:

For the two and half day tour listed above, the cost is about 1600RMB per person, including hotel and all meals. The Department of the History of Science will cover the travel between Hefei and Tunxi City.

Weather in Hefei and Huangshan:

Hefei: 7- 22Tunxi and Huangshan: 6- 22. An umbrella or raincoat is necessary.

Visa Requirement:

Citizens from other countries need a visa to travel to China. The LOC will provide needed documents for that purpose.

Money Matters:

There is a China Bank branch in the neighborhood of the USTC eastern campus, where you can exchange RMB for 21 types of major currencies. Banking time is 9:00-11:00 and 14:00-17:00. Credit cards issued by a non-Chinese bank may not be accepted.

How to get to Hefei

There are direct flights between Hefei and all major cities in China: Haerbin, Beijing, Shanghai (Pudong), Shanghai (Hongqiao), Nanjing, Qindao, Hangzhou, Fuzhou, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Haikou, Nanning, Kunming, Xi’an, Guilin, Guiyang, Changsha, Chengdu, Chongqing.

There are express trains at nearly every hour between 7:00 and 19:00 between Shanghai (Hongqiao) and Hefei, which is most convenient.

The LOC will arrange transportation between airport, train station and the hotels on request.

Leaving from Tunxi:

The travel agency will arrange the transportation to the airport on request.

Papers and Abstracts:

If you wish to present a paper at ICOA-8 or display a poster please submit an abstract to the co-Chair of the SOC, Professor Shi Yunli (ylshi@ustc.edu.cn), by 31 December 2013, using the sample abstract template below. Remember to specify which topic you want your paper to be included under, and whether you wish to give an oral presentation or display a poster. Since there are limited places available for oral presentaitons, some “oral” papers may have to end up as poster papers. The Scientific Organising Committee will finalise the program by 1 February and advise all those who submitted abstracts, leaving them adequate time to register for ICOA-8 and make the necessary airline and hotel bookings.
