Lecture Abstract
In the history of astronomy, the total solar eclipse of 18 August 1868 is regarded as a watershed event that led to major breakthroughs in solar physics, thanks largely to the application of photography, spectroscopy and polariscopy.
In this lecture we will discuss some of the astronomers who were sited in India, examine their instruments and their ground-breaking observations, and reveal the true discoverer of helium.
